Jackson Pollock Marble Painting

SAIC young artist learned about Abstract Art and Splatter Painting with tempera paint and construction paper. They visited the Modern Wing of the museum to look at Jackson Pollock’s paintings and created their own Jackson Pollock Abstract works.
Recontextualizing Flemish Classics

Young SAIC artists visited the museum to look at the Flemish and Italian paintings from the 1500s and learnt about Flemish textures, Italian Renaissance architecture and expanding compositions proportionally through grid translation. The group took photos of Flemish paintings, Italian paintings, buildings around Millenium Park and their portraits to combine and form a collaged composition.

Young fashion designers looked at paper dresses from the 1960′s and modern work by Hussein Chalayan and Yohji Yamamoto before using non-fabric materials to explore extreme volume and shapes.
Architectural Drafting of Dream School Design

After looking at designs by Tadao Ando and Peter Exley for inspiration, young architects are designing Dream School as a collective project. Each of them signed up for a program he or she wanted to design and made drawings of what the space will look like. Later, the entire enterprise will be produced in architectural model.
My World

SAIC young artists learned about collage, perspective, and how to draw from life. They made sketches from nature around Michigan lake and combined with magazines images and photos of themselves to create a composition in a world of their own creation. The collage was then painted over on DuraLar with gouache watercolor.
Horse Animations

SAIC young animators looked at the Western American artwork of horses in the Rice Wing of the museum. They learned about Photoshop painting and animation walk cycles to create looping animations of running horses using Adobe Photoshop and Wacom tablets.
Cardboard Plates

6-7 year old Multi-Arts class visited the sculpture Hinoki by Charles Ray in the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. They learned about textures, materials, and contrasts before making their own plates for printmaking with cardboard and waterproof gel medium.

After visiting the Tang dynasty animal sculptures in the museum, 8-10 year old artists created animals out of foil and masking tape. The sculptures will be painted next week !
Fabric Dying and other Fabric Manipulations

Young Fashion students looked at designers who use fabric manipulation in their designs such as Rodarte. They learned how to mix and prepare fabric dyes and various dying techniques such as ombré and over-dying colors to transform the white cotton fabrics into their own designs.
