Cardboard Plates

6-7 year old Multi-Arts class visited the sculpture Hinoki by Charles Ray in the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. They learned about textures, materials, and contrasts before making their own plates for printmaking with cardboard and waterproof gel medium.

SAIC 6-7 year old artists looked at Jasper Johns’ Flag paintings and visited the painting The Kaye by Jackson Pollock in the museum before making their own artworks using oil pastels and paper collage.

6-7 year old artists visited the painting The Waterfall by Henri Rousseau in the museum and learned about backgrounds and foregrounds in painting. They then created a landscape featuring exploration into colors, shapes, and collage techniques.
Joseph Cornell Boxes

6-7 year old artists viewed the boxes of Joseph Cornell in the Modern Wing of the Art Institute and discussed how collections of objects can become art. They then made their own version of Cornell boxes with personal drawings and objects inside!

Before starting their own self-portraits in clay, the six and seven year-old artists looked at different kinds of portraiture at the Art Institute, specifically Honoré-Victorin Daumier‘s bronze heads. The campers also sketched some of these artworks, looking at how expression, feeling, and personality were conveyed!
How To Grow A Sculpture
