Painting like Matisse : Still Lifes

4-5 year old artists went to see Matisse paintings in the Modern Wing to learn about his still life paintings. They created a still life of their own using acrylic, oil pastels, and watercolors.



Flags of Ourselves

SAIC 6-7 year old artists looked at Jasper Johns’ Flag paintings and visited the painting The Kaye by Jackson Pollock in the museum before making their own artworks using oil pastels and paper collage.



Google SketchUp

SAIC young architects went to Chicago Architecture Foundation to look at model of Chicago and Navy Pier Pavilion design competition. They also attended architecture family camp, learned about structural engineering, and were lead through basic drawing tools in Google SketchUp by two wonderful student TA’s: Reagan and Zoe. The class will later develop these skills to design a full scale structure.



Pattern Making

Young SAIC fashion designers modified a basic bag pattern into their own original designs to sew fully lined bags.



Painting with Pallet Knives

Young SAIC artists visited the art museum to look at paintings by Kandinsky and Picasso. They learned about directional mark making, simplified shaped, and colors. They also learned how to use paint with pallet knives and other non-brush tools!



Rousseau Collage

6-7 year old artists visited the painting The Waterfall by Henri Rousseau in the museum and learned about backgrounds and foregrounds in painting. They then created a landscape featuring exploration into colors, shapes, and collage techniques.



African Mask Making

A group of 4-5 year old artists went to the African Art Gallery in the museum to learn about African Masks and Art. They then created their own masks out of plaster gauze, acrylic paint, and Mod Podge gloss medium.



Dream Room

After visiting the Thorne Galleries in the Art Institute, the young architects learned about material, scale, and texture. They then built model rooms with foam cores, rice paper, corrugated cardboard, construction paper and model magic. They were encouraged to explore the design of their Dream Room by drawing plans and sections of the design.



The Animal in You !

4-5 year old artists talked about masks and animal faces before visiting to the museum to see the Kuba mask, which resembles an elephant trunk. The artists also learned about different cultures, transformation of identity , mix media and patterns to create their artworks with plaster gauze and paint.

8-10 year old artists visited Alex Katz‘s artwork “Two Friends” in the museum and used it as inspiration to make transparent overlay images with marker, ink, and gouache on clear plastic.
