This work began years ago when I was asked to write an essay on beauty. I had nothing to say about beauty, so I decided to approach the question by doing something semi-procedural: go to “beautiful” places with various friends and audio recording equipment, then transcribe the recordings and see what emerged. After my first transcriptions, it became clear that on these trips a great deal of time was spent consulting maps and otherwise getting oriented, and the language of that was interesting and often funny. It had that quality of Georges Perec’s work that I love, his capacity to capture things that are so obvious no one notices them. I decided to keep attending to this until I had ninety-nine pages, which then became the book We Are Here.
