Art Is Hard!: Amy Schleser

Gallery X | September 7–September 25, 201o
Opening Reception: Tuesday, September 7 ; 4–6 pm

Amy Schleser’s (BFA 2011) exhibition Art is Hard! presents a body of work investigating the rationales for art education in state-supported schools. Some educators are turning to arts integration (teaching art in the context of other school subjects) to show that art is a valuable academic resource. However, other educators worry that arts integration can weaken the argument for art as its own discipline. In Art is Hard!, Schleser explores the current educational trend towards interdisciplinary instruction, specifically the integration of art with math and science. Art is Hard! showcases Schleser’s artist’s books and printed matter that addresses art education’s relationship to scientific and mathematical instruction within American public schools; playing with the misconception that art and math are incompatible. Gallery X will be transformed into a mock classroom for the duration of this show.
