C Psychology presents a recollection of childhood memories through atmospheric scenes at once ethereal and melancholic. Images draw upon a Romantic 19th century aesthetic, evoking dream-like states through the careful depiction of light. Alluding to the writings of Proust, memory is expressed as mental time travel, a guide to the present, and a voyeuristic reference for future outcomes. Through figurative works and lyrical compositions, each artist allows viewers to explore a weakened and complicated sense of reality.

THE LEROY NEIMAN CENTER GALLERY|MAY 9–JUNE 7

RECEPTION|THURSDAY, MAY 9, 4:00–6:00 p.m.

Engaging with questions of time, history, vision, identity, and the body, Sophie Kahn (MFA 2013) combines digital cutting-edge processes within an archival and historiographic tradition. The resulting sculptures, 3D printed busts fabricated from imperfect data, recall monuments that depict the artist as both an innovator and archeologist. Using museum-style modes of framing, Artifact excavates the still image of the portrait through post-photographic means.

Within and Without examines the limitations of the frame, citing literal frames found in video and photography, structural devices in architecture, and perceptions of space framed through context and history. Each piece challenges one’s desire to situate him or herself within the frame, disrupting space and accessibility while maintaining a self-conscious understanding of its own limitations.

The frame speaks to the dilemma of access, presenting some information within its confines and deeming other knowledge unattainable. The work included in the exhibition ends not at the frame of the image, but extends beyond its borders, manipulating the space of the gallery and amplifying one’s awareness of its spatial organization. The arrangement of work oscillates between moments of vibration and anxiety and moments of rest, defined by both the careful placement of each piece in the gallery and the duration of the viewer within the space.

Showcasing the work of four artists, Within and Without functions among multiple disciplines, not only through the presence of different media in one space, but in the way each work questions and challenges its own medium.

UPDATE| WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3 4:30-5:30 P.M. IN GALLERY X

Free Mason: Pick Up the Pieces navigates cultural fantasies and icons through their mystical, constructed, and romantic elements. Incorporating performative gestures and personae that hold both direct and esoteric relationships to funk, hip-hop, rock, and blues, Rashayla Marie Brown (BFA 2013) attempts to reimagine signifiers surrounding race, gender, and sexuality connected to these forms.

Masters in the realm of construction, ‘freemasons’ reference a secret society that employs symbols and rituals related to mysticism and craft. Citing this experience of
collective consciousness, Brown’s works present a visual exploration of the expressive
qualities and constructed aesthetics of popular culture. At once familiar and strange,
photographs perform as a metaphor for the constructed nature of identity in modernity and post-modernity, and as a space to redeem, claim, unpack, and reposition icons that relate to cultural consumption.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Brown will host an artist talk featuring SAIC faculty
member Shahrazad Shareef on March 21. The conversation will take place at 4:30 p.m. in Gallery X during the weekly meeting of student group Black at SAIC.

Within and Without explores the phenomena of the frame, its boundlessness and its limitations. Challenging tendencies to desire comfort through an understanding of space via context and personal history, the framing devices in this exhibition speak to the dilemma of access that ends not at the edge of the image, be it printed or spatial, but extends more abstractly beyond the borders of each piece. Heightening awareness through formal and visual echoes drawn out by the installation of photographs and video-based works, perhaps our attention is not guided to image itself, but to its ability to represent ultimately unattainable spaces.
