Jim TerMeer is a product designer and educator. As a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Jim’s teaching centers on the research and practice of the emerging global independent design movement; its connection with the new ideas of making objects, systems and experiences; and preparing young designers for these new challenges through collaborative sponsored projects and graduate thesis research. Recent collaborations include projects exhibited at the Salone de Mobile, NY ICFF, and Neocon in Chicago. As partner in the design studio giffin’termeer, Jim has applied a decade of experience in the development of technology products, consumer goods and product brands into experimental projects that investigate the future of objects—and how culture makes and produces them. His work has been exhibited worldwide in events in Milan, Tokyo, NY, Seoul, Cheongju Korea, London, and St. Etienne France. Jim has a graduate degree from the Design Academy Eindhoven and lives and works in Chicago.

For the last eight years she has specialized in developing and teaching collaborative, design-build Industry Project courses in partnership with outside industries. New products generated from these classes are launched at international venues such as the Salone del Mobile in Milan and the New York Contemporary Furniture Fair. Her education includes a Masters of Design in Product Design and a B.F.A.(with honors) in Environmental Art from Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. She is a partner in HAELO Design, which produces creative projects including wearables, furniture, lighting, housewares and exhibition environments. HAELO’s design work has been shown at the New York Contemporary Furniture Fair, Design Within Reach, the Chicago Cultural Center, Sullivan Galleries, and Devening Projects. Helen Maria has designed and curated exhibitions including ‘Deceptive Design’, ‘Beyond Function: The Art of Furniture’, ‘ThickDesign’, and ‘Moholy: An Education of the Senses’, and developed a kit of tactile aids for the Art Institute of Chicago to enhance the experience for low vision visitors.
